It was an interesting football match-up this past Friday with Arundel High School visiting Old Mill High School. Arundel came into the game with a 7-1 record including impressive wins over Chesapeake and Annapolis. While Old Mill entered the game with a 5-3 record including an impressive win over Chesapeake as well. Thus this set up to be a terrific affair that might likely come down to the final minutes. Thus when the game unfolded it turned out to the tremendous and tight affair people expected.

First Half-

Arundel jumped out to an early lead on Junior Quarterback’s Austin Slye touchdown pass. This wound up being a lead they enjoyed deep into the second quarter. This was because Old Mill’s offense struggled through much of the first half to get anything going. With Senior QB Markus Thompson struggling and Senior Running Back Ryheam Tull held in check Old Mill could not move the ball. Things would continue to sway in Arundel’s favor as a rushing touchdown by Junior RB Jordan Andrews put the Wildcats up 14-0. Thus Arundel was beginning to take full control of the game.

Now with Old Mill teetering on the edge of the game becoming a rout they needed a break or big play. They ended up getting this half way through the second quarter from their special teams. This was when Old Mill blocked an Arundel punt for a safety at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter. This occurred after a strong defensive stand that backed up Arundel inside their 15 yard line. The score now read 14-2 with Old Mill now with a pulse in the football game.

Old Mill then immediately after getting back off the safety got even closer on the scoreboard. As at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter QB Markus Thompson threw a 63 yard touchdown pass to Sophomore Wide Receiver Camron Winborne. This big play made the score 14-8 with Old Mill failing on their two point try. Now though Old Mill headed into halftime right back in a game they were not in through much of the opening half.

Second Half-

Arundel came out and looked to reestablish control of the game as they came out and scored the first points of the second half. It started as they forced a fumble by Old Mill on their first drive of the third quarter. Then RB Jordan Andrews rushed for his second touchdown making the score 20-8 after an unsuccessful two point try on their end. Now after working hard late in the first half to get back in the game Old Mill once again needed a response. And thus Old Mill responded as QB Markus Thompson threw his second touchdown pass of the night to Junior Tight End Tra Thomas. This made the score 20-15 with a successful point after attempt. Now the game was on as Old Mill with that touchdown showed they were not going away.

The game then began to tread in the mud as the score stayed 20-15 Arundel into the fourth quarter. Both teams traded punts and the game started to become a stalemate. But then Old Mill then came up with the first quality offensive drive of the fourth quarter and hit pay dirt. As QB Markus Thompson hit Senior WR James Chew for his third touchdown pass of the game. This score made it 21-20 with their two point try unsuccessful and gave Old Mill its first lead of the game.

Now the pressure rested on Arundel to once again pull off a late game rally to win another tough game. But as Arundel has been able to do all year is respond to adversity and that is what they did. As Arundel put together a forceful drive led by strong running from RB Jordan Andrews and several big time throws by QB Austin Slye. They capped off this clutch drive with RB Jordan Andrews topping off his big night with his third rushing touchdown of the game. Then with an unsuccessful two point try Arundel led 26-21 with just over 3 minutes to go. It was left up to the Arundel defense to closeout another hard fought win. The Arundel defense answered the call and forced a turnover on downs on Old Mill. Thus Arundel was able to kneel out the final moments of the game and gain the victory 26-21.

Wrap-Up-

Arundel in the end with their victory moved their record to 8-1 on the year and remained second in the Anne Arundel County Standings. While Old Mill’s record fell to 5-4 and puts them fifth in the standings and muddying up their playoff hopes. Overall the game played out as the tight game many thought it would be that despite its slow points was exciting throughout. Now Arundel moves on to play 5-4 Severna Park, while Old Mill will host South River who sits with a record of 5-4 themselves. So it remains to be seen where these two teams end up at the end of their respective years.
