This has the chance to be the best game of the Friday docket on the Anne Arundel County High School football schedule. South River will put its undefeated record on the line, while Arundel will look to make it 3 consecutive wins after their season opening loss. South River has gotten to 3-0 on the season by defeating Westminster on the road 42-20. Winning at home 35-14 against Meade and 62-22 on the road against Annapolis. Arundel sits at their 2-1 record thanks to a season opening loss to North Point 55-32. They then won at home against Severna Park 27-16 and then won on the road at North County 37-26. South River is looking to turn the tide in this matchup with Arundel winning the last 5 against them.

For South River they will look to continue their lopsided winning ways. As with a +83 point differential through their first three games they are beating their opponents by big margins. Winning by an average of 27.6 points per game so far this season. South River will be led by their very talented offensive attack. With Senior quarterback David Foust and senior receiver Sean Leonard leading the passing game. While Junior running back/safety Delvin Johnson anchors the running game. Foust must continue to push the ball down the field like he has so far this year. This ability to hit the big play will put pressure on an Arundel offense either without its starting QB or with a hobbled one. Nasir Franklin-Branch, Delvin Johnson and the rest of the defense will have to play well also. While forcing a turnover or two too steal possessions for South River which will be critical in he game. South River will need a balanced attack on offense, along with continuing to create chunk plays to overwhelm Arundel and win their large average margin they sit out coming in.

For Arundel they come into the game with a -1 point differential. Winning their two game by an average of 11 points per. They are still trying to find their footing especially on offense as they have been solid, but inconsistent at times. It also does not help they are missing their star quarterback Austin Slye with injury, and no word yet on his return. Arundel needs other players to continue to step up in his absence on both sides of the ball to keep winning. Which means more of the load will fall on Senior running back Jordan Andrews to be the anchor on offense. Leading the charge in the running game and making life more manageable for the backup QB if he has to play. On offense they will need to limit turnovers as well as they have given the ball up at least once in all three of their games this years. Plus if receivers Petey Tucker and Shaun-Trent Okoye make a few plays early on for their quarterback it will allow the whole passing game to settle in. like They will need to be stout in run defense which has not been as strong allowing over 100 yards rushing in all three games. They will also need to generate a turnover to give short field to their offense, with likely a backup QB. Taking the pressure off the offense to have to sustain long drives by giving Red zone possession early. Arundel if they do not have the services of Austin Slye will need to play a clean game to have a chance versus a very strong South River team.

I see this game even without Slye available being fairly close then what South River is used to. As Arundel with Jordan Andrews and South River with Delvin Johnson should be able to both run effectively and limit the amount of possessions. Which means it will come down to which QB can make the two to four plays through the air to make a difference in the game. With both sides having so many pass catching weapons if these QB’s can get them the ball big plays can happen against two solid, but not world beating defenses. If this ends up  double digit margin result that is not good for Arundel, but if it stays within one score it is anyone’s game.

Final Score: Arundel defeats South River 30-28
