Finding quality safety prospects to spearhead the backend of a defense is always key to building a strong unit. Players that have the athleticism, physicality, and anticipation to be consistent playmakers on defense. Safety prospect Kye Holmes falls into this category as a player who has the skillset to make a huge impact at the position. Kye Holmes as he continues to grow at the position will only develop further into a more coveted safety prospect. A player that will see his stock rise with another strong season.
The Gonzaga product stands at 6’0” 185 lbs. and is currently rated a 2-star recruit by Rivals.com. This young recruit displays several key attributes on film that make him an underrated, and high-quality talent. The Class of 2021 recruit on film showcases great speed and quickness when pursuing ball carriers. Giving consistent effort when chasing plays down in the open field. He is a very physical player and good tackler, while excelling in his role when around the line of scrimmage. Providing Gonzaga, a physical tone setter on the backend of their defense. Holmes also shows off good reaction time, by being able to decipher where the ball is going on a play. Quickly getting to the area to make a play on it or deliver a big hit. In coverage Holmes is solid in both man and zone. Albeit zone coverage is where his skills most shine as it allows him more to roam and react in an area. Holmes operates almost as a pseudo-linebacker in Gonzaga’s defense. Meaning because of his strong tackling and quickness around the line of scrimmage he is shines more in the box than out in space.
Holmes does need to further grow in coverage at his position to be a more well-rounded defensive back. He is certainly good now but working on his technique in man coverage will go a long way to helping him better his game. He has good eye discipline when reading and reacting to plays as well, but this area could improve still. Holmes contributions as a special teamer also gives him an opportunity to play earlier on when he gets to the next level. As he is a standout on kick and punt coverage units for Gonzaga. As he most of the time is first to the returner on pursuit. This should give him the opportunity to get some early chances at the next level to play if he shows a continued willingness to play special teams.
Holmes as a safety prospect has the speed and physicality to be a good strong safety as his career advances. If his coverage abilities continue their upward trend, he will become a more versatile piece to use on defense. His comfort and play around the line of scrimmage is noticeable and could even make him more suited to play more as a linebacker. That is if he develops and bulks up more physically. Holmes as a player has many strengths that make him a potential defensive presence down the road. He just needs to continue to work hard and harness his abilities. Holmes currently owns one official offer from a college program, being Liberty. Though with a breakout great campaign this coming season his stock should skyrocket.
