The Maryland and D.C. High School football scene boasts a bevy of gifted players at a wide variety of positions. Players that each standout for their own specific set skills that make them highly touted prospects. On the defensive side of the ball, Mattheus Carroll is a Class of 2021 recruit worth watching. Mattheus Carroll is a player poised to further establish himself as a star defensive prospect out of the Class of 2021. He has all the tools to be tremendous defensive force. Which is why it was great to be able to get in contact with him recently and learn more about his game and goals for next season.

Carroll stands at approximately 6’5” 220 lbs., making him a tall and long, but well put together pass rusher on the defensive line. When I inquired about his game, we started with him describing his strengths. As he stated,” The biggest strengths in my game is my speed off the edge. Also getting pressure on the passer.” The film supports his claims as the Gilman High School product displays great speed off the edge. Consistently causing disruption in the backfield and ruining plays before they can even get going. He has a good first step which allows him to get opposing blockers on their heels immediately. He takes advantage of his opponent utilizing quickness along with some solid hand combinations to get to the ball. He also showcases great lateral quickness when chasing plays down in space. Being able to sniff out and bring down ball carries on outside runs. While also being able to run down pass catchers on screen passes. Carroll due to his length, has great range at his position and it allows him to create leverage in pass rushing situations. Carroll uses his longs arms to create space for himself to transition to a move, or decrease the amount of distance between him, blocker, and quarterback. Carroll’s physical tools along with his constant technical improvement make him a true rising star.

I also learned about Carroll’s work ethic when I asked about what improvements he wanted to make to his game. As he described, “I want to most improve on my strength and want to continue to get stronger and faster.” Showing he has the mindset to strengthen his strengths along with improving other areas of his game. Going on to say,” I feel as though once I get those two things up, I will be able to compete anywhere.” Further stating, “Also I do think my technique with my pass rushing hand combinations and reactivity can improve.” Meaning he understands the more he can add to his game from a technical standpoint the better he can mesh them with his physical strengths. Carroll thoroughly seems to know where he is at to this point as a player, knowing what he must do to reach his full potential.

The final topic I inquired about from Carroll had to do with his goals for the coming football season. As I found out he has several, that stem from a multitude of avenues in his young career. He first stated, “goals I have set for myself is be the best version of myself, help the team improve, and also continuing to improve personally.” Also saying, “Leading the league in sacks I think, is something that is achievable for me.” Carroll shows a want to improve himself and while helping his team win the coming season. Showcasing his want for his personal growth and team success on both accords. Carroll then went onto state his goals he has for his collegiate career when the opportunity comes. Saying, “Although I have college offers, I do not want to settle.” Carroll currently owns offers from 17 different collegiate programs. Including Boston College, Duke, Cincinnati, and Maryland. He continued, “I want to continue to improve so that way I am ready to compete at the collegiate level when I get there.” Showcasing Carroll’s confidence in himself, while also displaying the foresight of the work he must still put in to make and succeed at the college level.

In all Mattheus Carroll is a young man that has all the physical gifts to be great. He also shows he has the mindset and work ethic to know what he can and must do to be the one of the best players in the 2021 Class. With another good productive year, Carroll’s stock should only skyrocket on the national scene. This young recruit has the package of intangibles and talent to be one of the best defensive prospects in the DMV area going forward.
