In a recent opportunity I gained to get in contact with recruit Eric Ford. I wanted to pose a few questions to him to learn of his opinions on his game and the positions he plays. Eric Ford is a very versatile player for Landon School contributing at 3 different positions. These being outside linebacker, safety, and tight end all of which he makes numerous plays at. Eric Ford being a player with such great talent and versatility make him a very intriguing prospect to cover. This piece will look to present his responses to the 4 questions I posed to Eric Ford recently. Analyzing his response and how they explain his thought process and understanding of the game as a player.
The first question I posed to Ford was, what task does he consider most important to accomplish at each position he plays? Ford responded, “The most important task to accomplish is to do my job and do it right. Because if one person is out of place it could change the outcome of a play.” This shows Ford recognizes at all the positions he plays that he must always lineup and be in the right position for his unit to operate effectively. Especially because of the fact he plays multiple positions of Landon’s defense he must know his assignment and duties each play to a tee. This also showcases his knowledge to understand a system being that where he lineups in a formation on either side of the ball had different responsibilities. Displaying his knowledge for the game to handle so much information he must decipher at each position to best execute his job. His response shows the maturity of his thinking of the game, knowing he has the skill to make impact plays but knowing he cannot compromise his other teammates. This means Ford is trustworthy in terms of being able to deploy him in numerous situations and have faith he comprehends and will carry out his assignment effectively.
The second inquiry I had dealt with, does he see himself as a more valuable contributor as an offensive or defensive player? Ford explained, “I see myself as a more valuable defensive player, but I am talented both offensively and defensively. So, I can do both well.” This means Ford sees himself as more impactful on the defensive side of the ball, as he gets most of his snaps with that unit. He on film shows a great comfort and fluidness as a defensive player. Plus, his playmaking as an athlete I see shown more when he is playing linebacker or safety on film. His physicality, speed and read and react skills shine more frequently as a defensive player. Ford is right though as well; in that he is still very talented on both sides of the ledger. With the few opportunities he had to touch the ball on offense he displayed some of his ball skills as well as elusiveness in the open field. Perhaps with further opportunities Ford can show more playmaking ability as a tight end. His size and good strong hands will aid this effort, though in the end he is a more standout contributor as a defender.
The next question I posed to Ford was about, what positions he believes he plays the best at? Ford clearly stated, “Linebacker or safety it just depends where I line up at the start of a play.” This answer further displays the comfort he feels as a defensive player when out on the field. Not that he could not be a full-time tight end, but Ford understands his talents bets shine on the defensive side at the two positions he flourishes at. His range, speed and quickness, along with his physicality and football intelligence all showcase more when he plays a defensive position. As he seems to play freer flowing and with more decisiveness on this side of the ball. So, it would make sense he would say either linebacker or safety as his answer. Ford has a bright future at outside linebacker respectively as this is the positions, he plays the most. But because of his physical tools his ability to get more snaps at safety is also not out of the question which makes it so interesting if he will continue to play at both spots further into his football career.
The final question I had for Ford was about his goals for the coming season. As Ford stated, “Stay Humble and Stay Hungry.” This simple yet to the point response perfectly encapsulates Ford’s mindset as a player. As this shows his commitment to always get better each day. Never getting satisfied with the level he currently sits at as a player. This means he has great work ethic and leadership intangibles that will only influence his teammates in a positive way. Eric Ford is a young prospect worthy of much praise and attention. A player who takes pride in playing multiple positions at a high level. While understanding where his comforts lie in his game overall.
