At around 6’5” 255 lbs. Kyrik Mason continues to grow into his frame and should be a steady performer the coming season. Which is why it was great that I was able to contact Kyrik Mason recently to inquire about a bevy of topics. Topics ranging from his overall game to his aspirations and goals for the coming season. This piece will present Mason’s answers to the questions to depict his feelings on himself as a player and person.
The first topic I inquired about had to deal with what he believes are the strengths of his game. Mason elaborated on multiple parts of his game that he considered strong suits.
Mason stated,” The strengths in my game would be my football IQ and knowing the game which would separate me from the average offensive linemen.” Mason continued,” there has been several games where I helped the coach make adjustments that has helped us win or create separation in games.” Mason is very confident in his knowledge of the game which clearly has helped his performance on the field. This also displays his work ethic and the time he puts in studying his position and the game to be prepared each contest. Mason also described his vision during his blocking as a strong point as well. Stating,” another strength would be my vision as far as picking up blocks during delayed or regular blitzes.” This is a skill his quarterback appreciates knowing he has a tackle that can deter free rushers and protect him further.
The next topic I asked about was what part of his game he wanted to improve the most.
Mason explained,” The part of my game that I need to improve is finishing my blocks more consistently.” Meaning Mason wants to be better in terms of upping his physicality to finish blocks up to the whistle. This will allow him to be a more intimidating presence up front, as well as not letting up on a play in case it gets extended.
The next inquiries I had dealt with what does he consider the most important task to accomplish at his position. Along with what part of his game he wants scouts to acknowledge the most.
Mason stated,” The thing that I would consider to be the most important task to accomplish at my position would be having great footwork, football IQ and finishing blocks are essential.” All these ideals are the strengths of his game he mentioned prior, which if he continues to grow these aspects will become a well-polished lineman.
When he addresses what part of his game, he wants acknowledged:
He described,” The part of my game that I want scouts to see the most is my athleticism and football IQ. Because I feel like I am the smartest offensive lineman in the county and as far as athleticism my pulling ability and ability to block DB’s. Plus, I was doing this against the top talent in the nation.” Mason very much understands that his intelligence in terms of football, along with his physical gifts help make him a standout prospect. His great skill to block out in space and move smoothly as a pulling tackle make him a versatile lineman to utilize for the offense.
The final two topics I asked about included college offers he has recently received. Also asking about any goals he wants to achieve the coming season.
Mason on his college offers,” I have 2 offers from Liberty and William & Mary more to come in the spring.” Then when describing his goals, he stated,” The goals that I have set for myself next football season is to finish all blocks no matter what. Help my team in any way I can and finish my senior year with a ring on my finger.” As far as, the two offers this number will only increase as he puts together a strong senior season. In terms of his goals he shows a good balance of both personal and team-oriented goals. Wanting to improve further as a player, while making sure his team reaches championship heights.
