Gilman High School product Rayuan Lane is an intriguing prospect to analyze. As this Class of 2021 recruit plays both defensive back and wide receiver for Gilman. This type of versatility at the High School level showcases the immense talent Rayuan Lane has. As it displays his ability to learn and understand multiple systems and positions. As well as, the athletic ability he must adjust to playing on both sides of the ball during a game. This piece will look to provide a quick analysis of this young prospect. Presenting the strong points and areas of improvement in his game to that best describe him as a player.
Based on the film the best parts of Lane’s game include his speed and explosion as a runner, his great tackling, and his read and react skills. To first highlight his speed and explosion this is evident any time he has the ball in his hands. Whether it be he as a receiver, returner, or defensive back after a turnover Lane once he has the ball can explode up field with tremendous burst. Lane showcases great breakaway speed as well especially as a returner with the several return touchdowns he had last season. These also help him as a receiver as this makes him a legit deep threat. Along with being able to turn short receptions into long gains. Lane’s great speed makes him an asset that needs the ball in his hands as much as possible. Which is why his versatility to contribute in all three phases of the game make him such a valuable player for Gilman. In terms of his tackling this makes him a reliable player on defense. He is a consistently good tackler, using great technique and displaying good physicality in the process. He is very tough to break away from using his strength and strong hands to secure his wrap on the ball carrier and getting to the ground by any means. Being this secure of a tackler allows him to play in all situations and be trusted to make a play when the opportunity comes. Then as for his read and react skills these help him more so on defense than anything else. His ability to track the ball and make a play on it or the ball carrier is impressive to watch on film. He showcases great discipline, rarely ever over-pursuing a play and getting himself out of an advantageous spot. In coverage this allows him to be physical and close on passes quickly in space. Plus, this allows him to be constantly around the ball and generate many turnovers a s he did last season. Lane’s strong points help make him the playmaker he is in all 3 phases of the game. A player whose value is heightened when utilized in a bevy of ways on the field.
As for improvements he could make to his game, there are more tweaks than big changes. The first being just growing more as a defensive back in his overall technique. He does show solid coverage skills but could work to be even better in his footwork. Being sounder in his anticipatory step allowing him to be even better when driving on the football. This slight improvement will make him better in man coverage, helping to keep his feet and not get turn around when covering deeper routes. The other improvement he could make to his game is his route running as a receiver. Some of this improvement will come if he is able to get more opportunities at the position. He played not consistently at receiver, but with more chances on offense he can sharpen his route running skills. This means he will not always have to rely on his physical gifts to always get open but trust his technical skills at his position to get open. Just working more on this skill will make him a big play threat at every turn on offense. Becoming a player that needs more touches to make Gilman’s offense even more dynamic.
Rayuan Lane’s talents as a football player are evident when studying his play. His great speed, ability to play multiple positions, and be a playmaker always with the ball in his hands make him a true weapon. Lane being an underrated commodity has the skillset that will make him an impact player at the next level. Now with him having gotten his first D1 offer from Navy recently his name is starting to draw interest. With a strong senior year, he should cement himself as player in the area that deserves more attention.
