The DMV High School Football circuit presents a variety of quality teams across several conferences. Teams that boast some of the more talented players in the country. While also providing several underrated prospects that may not standout Nationally now. Which is why it is right to identify a couple of teams in the area worth keeping track of the coming football season. Whether it be because of a recent run of success, or the fact that they have some intriguing players to follow. Either way these teams must be looked out for next high school football year.
The first team to mention is St. John High School, who is apart of the WCAC Conference in Washington D.C. The reason to track St. John’s this coming season is not just because of their recent run of success. It is because they house a plethora to talented recruits from the Class of 2021. St. John’s has enjoyed 7 consecutive winning years which is highlightable in and of itself. The fact though that they have 6 of the Top Ten ranked Washington D.C. Class of 2021 recruits as per Rivals.com is impressive. Defensive Tackle Taizse Johnson is the highest ranked of this group as the second-best recruit behind Gonzaga QB Caleb Williams. Having his presence in the interior of their d-line will make them tough to run the ball against. While he will also provide interior pressure on the pass rush. The other five players are all offensive players with 4-star Wide Receiver Caleb Coombs the highest rated of the group. With Coombs, Tight end Bryce Butler, along with 3-star running backs Colby McDonald and Antwain Littleton St. John’s offense could be interesting to watch next season. They will need solid quarterback play to maximize the weapons they have. With a couple of rising junior battling for this spot it will be key for St. John’s to identify their signal caller. St. John’s did not reach the championship aspirations they had last year and have lost some talented pieces. This does give them a chance to integrate these talented players far more and make a run at the WCAC title.
The next team to discuss as one to follow is St. Frances High school in Baltimore, Maryland. The reason being the tremendous defense they could boats the coming season due to their strong group of recruits. After posting an 11-1 record last season, St. Frances is firmly set up to have another strong year. This team may be carried by the immense amount of talent on their defense. As they have 7 defensive players in the Top 35 Class of 2021 recruits for Maryland according to Rivals.com. 4-star Linebacker Aaron Willis leads the way as the highest rated recruit St. Frances defense and team boast. Add in 4-star defensive lineman Katron Evans and his fellow linebacker Jamon Johnson and their front seven can be intimidating. Players like Terrance Butler and Zionangelo Shockley will also contribute off the edge as well. Their secondary will see Clinton Burton take a major step and become a strong presence on their backend. He should be looked to be a playmaker and take on several tough assignments as next season goes on. St. Frances could only improve further off a 11-1 season by going undefeated. Which with this caliber of talent, especially on defense is entirely possible for this team. Now observes will have to wait and see how good this St. Frances defense and team will be the coming season.
The final team worth keeping an eye on the next high school football season is South River High School. Based in Edgewater, Maryland the Seahawks coming off a 10-1 season and coming within a game of the Championship in their league. Now this will be an interesting season for South River with them losing several key players this offseason and having now to transition. With players like Quarterback David Foust, Linebacker Nasir Franklin-Branch, and Wide Receiver Sean Leonard are some of several players that are graduating out of the program. The team will have to retool their roster at several key positions as they look to come back and have hopefully the same semblance of success. They will once again have to build their game plan through the running game and strong defense. Delvin Johnson will have to be the bell cow once again, with some young players stepping up in increased roles on defense. South River will experience some growing pains as they integrate young players into their system. Though talent is still very much they’re on this team to not fall off much.
These three teams all for various reasons should be intriguing to follow this coming year. With talented players to watch along with interesting story lines that could affect results. These teams should all see success in their respective leagues and further development of their young players. That is why these team a worth keeping track of going into next season.
